Initial Concept
The Kingdom of Fridgerton can trace its roots to a period of domestic confinement. On April 28th, 2022, King George, then stuck at home and missing scholastic lessons due to sickness, embarked on a project that would become the Kingdom of Fridgerton. Inspired by a then recent exploration of micronationalism (“going down the Micronational rabbit hole”), King George began to formulate the initial concepts that would eventually lead to the formation of the Kingdom of Fridgerton.
Rapid development
Following his recovery, the King’s dedication to the project remained resolute. He commenced work on the essential elements that would establish the Kingdom of Fridgerton as a micronation. This formative period witnessed the design of the National Nlag, the Royal Standard, Coat of Arms, Royal Sash, and other emblematic insignia. Additionally, rudimentary work on the first draft of the Constitution commenced during this time.
More importantly, this period also witnessed a pivotal development in the micronation’s identity: the selection of its name. Initially simply “Fridgerton,” the moniker eventually evolved into its current, more formal designation, “The Kingdom of Fridgerton”.
Flag Controversy
The initial excitement surrounding Fridgerton’s establishment eventually wore off and gave way to a calmer period of development. During this time, yet another critical decision regarding national symbolism arose: the selection of the official flag. King George deliberated between two options: a modernized adaptation of the flag used by the former Crown Colony of Malta and a previously designed flag specifically intended for Fridgerton.
Following consultations with various stakeholders, the decision was made to adopt the flag created expressly for the Kingdom of Fridgerton. This selection marked a significant step in solidifying the micronation’s unique visual identity apart from that of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Malta.
Digital Welcome
This period also marked the start of Fridgerton’s digital presence. King George acquired the domain name fridgerton.com and embarked on the creation of a rudimentary website.
The initial iteration of the website only included a concise introduction to the micronation, its constitution and a contact page. Though modest in scope, this website represented a critical first step in the ongoing development of fridgerton.com, which continues to evolve into the informative resource it is today.
Slower progress
While the initial momentum propelling Fridgerton’s development slowed, King George’s commitment to establishing the Kingdom of Fridgerton remained unwavering. However, this period witnessed a necessary shift in focus due to the King’s approaching O-Level examinations and involvement in other demanding projects.
October 2022 presented a particularly busy schedule for the King. His Majesty addressed the Maltese Cabinet and participated in the Safer Internet Forum, a youth-led European event emphasizing internet safety and youth engagement. The latter event, held in Brussels, provided a unique opportunity for the King to continue work on the micronation during travel periods. This productive time primarily focused on formalising the constitution and initiating the development of graphic identity templates for the Kingdom of Fridgerton.
Ceasing Progress
With the O-Level examinations looming, King George made the prudent decision to temporarily suspend work on the micronation.
This period of focused academic attention ensured the King could dedicate his full effort to achieving success in the O-Levels. Although work on the micronation was officially ceased, the King still occasionally worked on it and kept improving what they’ve worked on so far
Back again
The completion of King George’s O-Level examinations marked a turning point. Having fulfilled this academic obligation, the King seized the opportunity to reinvigorate efforts on the micronation.
King George directed their attention towards the creation of essential documentation, including ID Cards and researching commemorative passports. Additionally, efforts commenced on crafting a formal mission statement that would clearly state the Kingdom’s goals and aspirations. To further solidify Fridgerton’s position within the micronational landscape, King George embarked on a program of research, examining other micronations and micronational organizations. This period of exploration served to enrich the King’s understanding of the micronational world, providing valuable insights to guide the future development of the Kingdom of Fridgerton.
Almost abandoned
King George’s enrollment in a post-secondary institution marked a significant downturn in the amount of time they were able to allocate to the development of the Kingdom of Fridgerton.
This period witnessed a measured approach to ensure the continued development of the Kingdom of Fridgerton. King George contemplated various options, including the possibility of an official hiatus or even the potential cessation of the project entirely. Ultimately, a resolute decision was made to preserve Fridgerton for a future time when more attention could be devoted to its advancement.
Final Revival
The revival of the Kingdom of Fridgerton started when King George was looking for something new to do. Itching to get creative again, King George decided to bring the Kingdom of Fridgerton back to life. This marked the beginning of a new era for the micronation.
